Hi folks, this motor is finally for sale. See the video responses? "pandolin1" is also myself. See the ebay link, upper right of this page? Am sorry to see it go, but things and people must pass on. This video will remain up forever, however, so that everyone (me included!) can enjoy this unique, first motor of its kind.

Congrats on your first e-bay bid.. Like i said in my last post here,I'm always fascinated with vintage equip especially 120 yrs old I'm sure you hate to part with it (I've done the same thing), But life must go on. Good luck on E-Bay I got items on there myself.. Thanks and have a great day.. (I'll watch your item and see what it brings)............

Thanks for the props. That -was- the first and only time for it to run on alternating current. My EE friends at a specialty forum doubted it would go, but go it did! The motor was gotten many years ago from a curios dealer. The video was made with just a cheap digicam (to my regret now that I can do HD). Thanks for your comment!

Wow that looks lethal enough! They didn't think much about safety back in the days! :S

So, from the very same shop, at the very same time: the world's first plug-in appliance motor, and also invented and made there: the world's first plug-in desk fan. Two firsts from one trio of inventors, working together to exploit Edison's new electric lighting power system for things other than just to light a light bulb.
By: HartfordTommy. on 26 Oct 08, 04:20:54
see a reply made by myself up above for the answer. The Smithsonian has an electric fan version of this very same motor. There are only a few of them extant in the world today, really neat looking, like this, but upside down and on a cast iron claw-footed base, with a LIGHT BULB atop to give a two-speed option: high speed=all the current through the motor. Low speed=the bulb in series with the motor winding, and so dropping the voltage, via the bulb (a resistor), and then the fan goes slow.

It would have been used to -power- a sewing machine in a tailor's shop or in a rich man's home.
By: wbeaty. on 29 Apr 08, 04:24:56
I always wondered who invented the modern electric motor. Faraday's were lab curiosities, and even Ben Franklin had motors. I vote for Zenobe Gramme, who had been trying to create a DC generator to replace batteries. His had a very smooth non-pulsing output, with a large nmuber of rotor coils and commutator segments. At an inventors' show he accidentaly discovered that it ran as a motor. So the "Gramme machine," the DC electric motor we all use today, was invented by accident.

Nikola Tesla quit the Edison company after not receiving a bonus for redesigning Edison's equipment. But what exactly did Tesla redesign? Edison's motors and generators have a rotor placed between the poles of a U-shaped stator. But all his later motors are symmetrical, with cylindrical stators. I suspect that Tesla invented the modern compact "Cylindrical" motor for Edison, then walked away in disgust. Without Tesla, all DC motors might still look like the above, with a U-shaped stator.

Very nice! Excellent piece of machinery, and you are very lucky to own it. you said molested ....
By: HartfordTommy. on 25 Feb 08, 07:09:34
I have no idea. It's not the last survivor, but it is possibly the cleanest, most original C&C remaining. It has never been molested by "restoration"; it's still nearly like new, works as well as when it was made 121 years ago.
By: HartfordTommy. on 25 Feb 08, 07:07:27
Hi mptrax, you are not so wrong. Small, demonstration electric motors =were= made for decades before the C&C. What makes the C&C unique is that it is the first plug-in electric motor. All the previous motors were run from costly, weak and fussy batteries. This was the first household electric motor. This one was outfitted to run a sewing machine. Another version of it made in the same shop that year was the world's first electric table fan; plug it into the light socket!

thats really awesome, you have a little peice of history there.
By: mptrax. on 07 Feb 08, 07:33:32
may be i m wrong i always knew that the 1st electric engine has been made by PANCIOTTI in Italy in the middle of 1800.
