The 40D is not obselete by any stretch of the imagination. The 50D does not replace it - it's a new model that's positioned above it at a much higher price. The 40D will remain on sale and remains a superb DSLR for the money. There'll always be new models though and the 40D is now a year old. If it bothers you to not have the very latest, I'd suggest visiting the cameralabs forums where rumours of new models are often discussed. You'll also find out when the trade shows are coming up...

There's no way to keep up with the never-ending dual between Canon and Nikon. As soon as you buy "the latest", it becomes obslolete. I found that out when I researched the hell out of the 40d before buying it, only to find out a few months later it was made obsolete. Canon's motivation seems to be making money...not loyal customers.

This camera takes Compact Flash cards, and the bigger it is, the more pictures you can take. So I would buy the biggest you can find/afford. Check the Canon website first though to see if there's a limit on the size.

Noise is the texture and random specks you see in shadows or on flat areas of colour (like a blue sky) on a photo. As the ISO increases, so does the noise. The greatest and the most versatil is Canon EOS 400D or 450D.. I have 400D and 40D and I prefeer the first.. less weight, and more or less the same quality. You can use a flash if you'd like to illuminate a person close to the camera - but it'll only be effective for a few meters, so if the subject is further way, don't bother.

You've got it - a small f-number means a large aperture and the maximum light coming through the lens, but also a small depth of field. A large f-number means a small aperture and more in focus, but less light gets in. You can use large f-numbers for night photography for a bigger depth of field, but you'll need longer shutter speeds to compensate for the small aperture, and if they go beyond 30 seconds, you'll need to use Bulb mode with a cable release. Ultimately it's all about experimenting!

Not at all - glad it helped! RAW is fun to play with and once you store some preset routines for your camera it really doesn't take that much time to do the post processing. I think the pictures come out slightly better in general and you can rescue pictures that would otherwise have been lost causes. Another downside of RAW that I forgot to mention is the file size. Just as an example on my camera shooting a 12mp JPEG comes out to 4mb. Shooting a RAW image takes up 14mb - 3x the size.

RAW is uncompressed data as is from the sensor. After when you're back at home you have to post process the image to generate a picture so over all it's a lot akin to shooting with film and developing later. The main advantage is that you can do so much more to adjust a RAW image right down to white balance. Point & Shoot users won't care (or will even dislike it because of the required post work) but enthusiast users almost demand it as fervently as they demand manual control.

Ive had a D80 for the past 3 months now and about 2 weeks ago I noticed that after I take a photo, or when Im viewing a photo, the camera will momentarily freeze and LED screen will show a flashing "low battery" signal. It happened more frequently as I filled up my camera. Could just be that my camera has alot of memory and is slowing down. Or should I really get it checked out?

Hi Joe, no it doesn't take videos. The only DSLR which can do video is the Nikon D90, out in the shops this month. The D80 is typically bundled with an 18-135mm lens, while the D90 will be bundled with an 18-105mm lens - but with anti-shake. Please visit cameralabs . com for our D90 preview.

I see where the lens dictates what camera i buy. I like the lightweight of the 410 and 510. IQ is very important and i like Canon the best in iq. Generally, are the Canon lens more expensive than the Olympus lens? When you are in live view(Olympus) and click this onto auto focus, does it always make that loud noise? Can i turn the noise off? Hello there, your evaluation of the Leica lens on the various Olympus bodies (Inc. Olympus E 410, (website) clarified your point. Certainly, this is an expensive lens, and perhaps I should consider the Oly 510. I need to see how cumbersome the auto focus on the 510 is vs.the e420. Their perfect e430 will have 2.7 articulating LCD and image stabilization, same small size as the e420. Santa Clause, maybe next year (: You have clarified so much , thank's for the GREAT youtube demos & website!

E430?!! They haven't even got the E420 in the shops yet! Who knows if they'll squeeze anti shake into that small body in the future - maybe, maybe not. I suspect not. So it all depends on how much you want or need anti shake. Remember no-one had it a few years ago and coped fine! And you could always fit one of the stabilised Leica lenses if you really want IS.

But prices will go down as time goes by and Canon and Nikon and them release more Image Stabilized lenses. That's a very good point, although we may have to wait for the EOS '450D' before Canon officially bundles its budget DSLR with the 18-55mm IS lens... some stores may bundle it with other models sooner though.

Gordon, I had the same idea as you..i waited for fz18 until fz28 came into stores, hoping the price would reduce. and its a heavy price to pay. The initial trend was that the market tried to reduce the price difference bet fz18 and fz28, and now the fz18 is actually more expensive ! fz28 is 339 USD and there aint one fz18 below USD 350. :(

For your budget I suggest the D40. The more megapixals in the D40x isnt really needed, unless you want really really big pictures. I usually shoot around 5megapixals and its more than enough. As the D40 is cheaper you could use the extra cash to get some really good lenses for it too.

Who needs 10MP ? Its just for marketing purposes. The MP race ist just ridiculous - i bought the D40, the D40x and D60 are so similar but much more expensive

Actually - it IS a touch sensitive screen on this Sony cybershot. A touch screen is a screen that you can touch to control the device. This camera is a touch screen, and I have had unbelievably BAD results with the durability of touch screen devices. They do not hold up, and overall - they are not reliable. That goes for phones, cameras, computer monitors, etc.

I HATE touch screen devices. The touch sencitivity always degrades over time, and you always seem to touch the screen at the WORST time, and that delays your shot. I say AVOID touch screens when possible.

It sounds like the camera;s autofocus system is getting confused and 'hunting' for the subject. I'd recommend either pointint it at something easier to focus on, increasing the surrounding light, or simply switching the lens to manual focus and manually focus it instead. The D60 won't improve this.

I'm pretty handy at the d40 but ive found that the one thing i dont like about it is sometimes i try to take a picture on autofocus and it wont take and i'll wait and wait and wait and just will not take. will I have the same problem?

I don't have any immediate plans, but I have used it and it's a good lens. There's several owners of it on the cameralabs forums if you fancy asking there - check the lens gallery for example shots, and the Canon section if you have any questions...
