Sorry for the misunderstanding. I pulled this quote from Dan's website. It's from an interview. I just wanted to clarify things.... there was even someone on here who said this song was written about Jesus. Not everyone is Christian you know, and I'm not sure if Dan was or wasn't. Doesn't really matter really. It's simply a wonderful tribute to his father and to all the fathers out there.

I am 29 years old and I am in tears now!! I am a Pete Seeger fan and I have heard so many versions of this song. But I haven't seen video of Peter, Paul, and Mary in 15 years!! My aunt and uncle, who were like my second set of parents were big fans of theirs. Peter, Paul and Mary are in their early 70s and Mr. Seeger will be 90 in MArch. Wishfru, the "guy in the middle" is Paul Stookey. He's playing the song in G, capoed to the third fret (you can adjust up or down frets to suit your voice). The basic progression is G Bm Am Dsus7 back to G. Start with G, hammer-on the B string before shifting to the Bm. Experiment with that, watch Paul's hands, and I think you'll pick it up pretty fast. I remember in grade school, my music teacher would play Peter, Paul and Mary, and Petula Clark albums and we sang to them. When I think about it, I don't know how we learned songs for the Christmas programs (yes, they were called Christmas programs back then), and spring programs when all we did was listen to those albums and sing along to them. I have done this song for years. Always makes me tear up. My folk group started doing this song again recently, I guess because of the wars in the Middle East. We perform mainly for seniors - fifties to eighties. it's incredible to look out at that sea of faces and see almost every one of them singing all the words to this song. Been trying to figure out how to play this on guitar for quite some tim. Think I finally figured it out after experimenting and tuningthe guitar differently so many times. I remember an all Jewish group of musicians playing "Three Men on a Mountain", and singing it as Christians sing it. Ironic, but fitting. They were not bound up by politics as some seem to be.
