The thinking was probably that, if you spread the men apart and try to assault the hill, you'll never get them together again and your assault will fail because the enemy can defeat each small group that makes it to the top, instead of a large group.

The tragedy of this assault was that the army chose the USCT (US Colored Troops) to go in as cannon fodder on a suicide charge against a fort that was virtually impregnable -- the Union never captured Fort Wagner in the war. The same sort of thing happened at Fort Pillow on the Mississippi River in Tennessee. The fort was practically indefensible against a land attack from the east, and the army chose to assign USCT there. Sad that the USCT were chosen for the most dangerous situations.

The regiments could only be sent in one at a time, there was swamp land on one side and the ocean on the other. It was absolutely amazing that any of these men made into the fort, let alone across the beach. This had to be the best Civil War film ever, I love Gettysburg to death, but this film seems more raw, more real. Maybe it's the gore which was lacking. ;)

Well not entirely correct. We did go to war with the Empire of Japan because the attacked Pearl Harbor but that didnt automatically place us at war with the Germans. Luckily the Germans honored their treaty with the Japanese and declared war on the United States.

I love how caring Jackson is through Wade's death. Take the time to watch Jackson constantly wipe the blood off of Wade's face and tell him he's gonna be fine. I agree with you but not entirely. A foothold in Europe as a front against Stalinist communism wasnt our intention with the D Day landings but it turned out to be essential in the decades to come. Africa in Nov of 1942 and in Europe on July of 1943. We fought on both fronts and supplied the British, Soviets, and Chinese. You as a Canadian should be grateful to my country for allying itself with the British Empire and liberating Italy and Western Europe and almost single handidly driving the Japanese from the Pacific.

i'm not saying i dont appreciate everything they did, but i don't think it was their numbers, as Jovian84 said, that helped us win. There were enough white soldiers to win the war for the North. Did their victory help suppress some level of racism for the soldiers, inspiring them to fight all the more for the cause of abolition? I don't know. No one could know that. Whether they turned the tide of the war at that point in time doesn't mean that the tide would not have turned without them.
