oh my god..i just got the D80 for my birthday. Amazeing camera! just pure amazeing, in every aspect. Highly recomended! soo easy to use, and wondeful outcomes!

well i got it like a week ago, i admit its amazing:D i shot circa 10000 pics with d40 before, and d80 is nowhere near, far far better, i recommend it !!

It is because the D40 isn't crammed with megapixels. It makes the camera operate faster, and noise are lower.. Hence it doesn't need so much Noise Reduction, and again it doesn't smear out details. But really, I'd chose the D80 anyday.

My brother has a D80, he was sooo pissed off that my D40 takes sharper pictures,lower noise on lowlights, we shot the same subject,same settings (ie. basketball court,aperture mode,ISO 200,same focal lenght etc.) We took hundreds of indoor shots as well with or without flash,again same subject...I tell you D80 buyers right now, Think twice,the D40 may lack some of the D80's manual luxury but the end product is the picture, My D40 really outclasses my brother's D80 in terms of image quality

yes, the out of cam jpgs are better. problem is it does not have an internal motordrive so you cant use the autofokus with lenses which don't have their own drive. also the viewfinder is brighter, there are more settings available. d40 is great for a starter cam and for people who do not want the full controle over their cam but if you're looking for a cam giving you more ways to controle the shot than you're better with an d80 or d200(d300)
