Look at Kracked Skulls, they are very good for budget. Earthwing boards (superglider/supercharger) are great quality and resonably priced as well. Spend the money on a good board (compared to no name stuff), as really another $30-50 isn't that much money and longboards last a long time. Better decks and trucks make the experience much better.

I've heard it's the same further south, along the coastline, in all the places were the Swing Revival movement is big, but I wouldn't know, personally. I'm no expert on this but have always understood that when the Charleston declined, it was adapted into two quite different styles, leading to the development of the Foxtrot and the Quickstep. I have always assumed that the American "Social" Foxtrot and Waltz were responses to the reality of small or crowded dance areas. George is right about the difficulties of "unlearning" something. Where on Earth would one Charleston these days (or wish to, to be honest)?

I am assuming that Murray's Foxtrot was put together to reflect the 'reality' of social dancing for mediocre dancers. What I don't understand is the full extent to which Slow Charleston developed independently, in Europe. In other words -- as it 'exported' at that level of complexity, or did it simply become more and more complex as a ballroom dance?

That's true, true enough. I only learned enough 'Foxtrot' to see what the basic differences are between it and the Charleston (my pet-dance). That is, unfortunately, the full extent of my interest in Foxtrot. One pretty much has to be a follow, for ballroom, if one is a female, because that is the only usable role in the real world. And I am a poor follow. :( She who taught me usu. dances Slow Foxtrot, but she taught us all social Foxtrot because it was just a quick introductory class. . . .

The "Social" Foxtrot is to ballroom dancing what painting by numbers is to art, or riding a tricycle is to cycling, i.e., a greatly simplified alternative but one that doesn't really address the point. The Slow Foxtrot, with its barely detectable beat and navigational nightmares, is something that's anything but fun to learn, but switching to the Social variation, which takes five minutes to master, would simply be running away from the problem.
