I wasnt talking about hunters who kill for fun, those are all bastards in my opinion. I was talking about the possibility of life as nature intended, however anyone who kills animals for food when they dont really need to is disgusting in my eyes. I agree about no difference between consumer, worker, hunter, thats why i am so pissed off about it, they are all equally guilty. It seems to me then, that the difference between a murderer and a hunter, at least using your definition, is the volume of killing. Hunters who kill when they have other foods or social programs available(food stamps, etc.) are exercising a choice: they prefer to kill. For them it's fun, or a "challenge", or compensates for other personal failings. ;-) Ultimately, there's little difference between the consumer, the slaughterhouse worker and a hunter. Except that hunters seem to enjoy killing.

you are absolutely right Cypherson, I should not let my tempert come into it and i should not insult people, but some of his comments at the begining of this video i found pretty insulting and offensive. Anyway, you are right, i should argue my point without insulting anyone. I appologize to Mr Barber, but i still find some of what he said deeply insulting, and anger is only a sign of caring. I think he should analyze the effects of limiting information and freedom of speech more deeply. I think that would only enhance the danger of those wanting harm others using technology. For one thing, fewer people would be able to think of solutions and ways to forestall nefarious applications. It would also place even more power in the hands of those "in the know" without the possibility of effective oversight.

it very well may be, i agree that the limbic (as well as feathers and light bones) play a role in higher cognition (and flight). but they are steps in evolution leading up to the primary/specialized structure, the frontal lobe(the wing) that specializes in the specific function of higher cognition (flight). the limbic has other functions, but the frontal lobe is the command center, and this is really not an arguable point because, like i keep saying, it is accepted.

Maybe we just have different ideas as to what should qualify as higher cognition. To use your own analogy, wings do not guarantee flight, light bones, feathers, proper weight to lift ratio are also critical and vital for flight. A creature with wings can not possibly hope to fly without these conditions being met. Also in keeping with this analogy my point about the limbic system was that it is a critical evolutionary step for higher cognition, just like light bones would be for flight.

Beliefs are not the same as knowing and it is amoral to act as though they are one in the same. For example you can believe something that is not true, but once you know the truth, then that belief no longer applies to the reality we experience, if you hold a belief about something we do not experience you can not verify if your belief is true, and so it is not knowledge. How could you possibly hope to preform higher cognition or advanced reasoning without the hippocampus. The parahippocampal gyrus and dentate gyrus are located in this region and the hippocampus is part of the limbic system. Sorry but without long term memory and the formation of new memory the frontal lobes would be limited in higher cognition, not to mention some other areas of the limbic system that are also required, like the thalamus. The way I define evil is (deliberately ignoring reality, reason, and knowledge because one or more conflicts with an irrational desire and/or a personal belief-something that can not be objectively verified as true.) From my experience things are far more complicated then a simple epic dichotomy of good vs. evil in the spiritual sense. In terms of evolution it was a critical step, and I know for a fact that with the human brain what exact structures perform what exact tasks is still very much in debate. I also know that "true higher cognition" can not be said to be unique to just homosapians as we have many examples of ancestors of humans that could acheive comparable levels. What truely sets us apart is our langauge and writing abilities. The limbic system was primary in terms of evolution, and its role is still critical.

I was not belittling Nigerian films at all, merely pointing out that Maliwood preceded Nollywood, and actually DOES have a more distinguished history than Nigeria's. I meant it as a 2nd opinion on this presentation. There is a great documentary on the subject called "An Introduction to African Cinema." FESPACO, Africa's great film festival, is in Burkina Faso, not Nigeria. I'm sorry if you felt some offense. I don't quite understand what your obsession with Ghanaian films is.

I hate when an African will try to belittle others work just to pull thier own up (that's sad and low) and i havewatched films from Mali and Senegal unless they have two different film industry, based on what i watched it's different from what you described. And by the way, Nigerian film industry usually do a film about Romance(90% of Nigerian film is about romance) including the upcoming Ghanaian film is usually Romance so your way off in what you claimed.

emmmm i stopped watching them long ago as they became more garbage, but i think i can still remeber Mortal Inheritance, Igodo, etc. Basically, just check out the old ones with actors like Justus Esiri, Peter Edochie, Richard Mofe Damijo, Saint Obi, Zack Orji, and other mature actors. They are more likely to be good stuff than the shitty romance ones.

yes i am Nigerian but i totally agree with your opinion. Quantity=/=quality. We Nigerians have become deeply saddened by the invasion of money-minded, talentless crooks into our movie industry. In the early days, the movies were of really good quality but then things took a turn for the worse and have not recovered ever since. Now what is being produced is recycled garbage. We hope that sanity is restored soon so that the real talents can come back.

Many films in Nollywood are actually just embezzlement schemes by gangsters. There is actually an older, more interesting film tradition in West Africa that has been referred to as "Maliwood" that has a far more interesting story. There have been some great films coming out of Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal and these should not be confused with the behemoth of Nollywood. Most "Nollywood" films are extremely low budget serials and soap operas, not real films.

I think the point here is that this is just the start, so what if they are not well produced. The whole point of them is tell a story, to educate the peopleof Nigeria. While this TED is different from what we're used to (or even what most of us like to watch) - I still think this particular talk is just fine! It provided a nice (albeit predictably boring) look into the mind of this fun designer. I don't know why there are so many negative comments. So what if you think it's pointless, the people who would make the journey to see it would certainly disagree with you. It's not like it's wasting tax dollars or anything. The pyramids were folly, but do you wish that they were never built? Think of a car, crushed in an accident. In the original accident, kinetic energy is applied to affect the damage. When they crush cars at a wrecking yard, they use the energy of the fuel they use to drive the big presses. One event happens quickly, the other at a much, (relatively) slower pace. It makes far more sense that billions of tons of rock were lifted up into the sky by a crash type event. That's a lot of altitude to gain. And would not erosion prevent the jagged edges?

The big bang is just religion in disguise, a sort of genesis of the universe. We're anthromorphising the universe, we are born and die so we assume this applies to the universe. We may find out that planets get "seeded" with the building blocks of life by,comets, space dust,debris,or even angels if we chose to call 'them' that. I can understand the need for a bit of cognitive dissidence to handle the pain of lost. The idea that a person you love may have just ceased in all forms is a bit of a lot to take at one go. Then again no god doesn't necessarily mean no afterlife. There's a lot of interesting studies into conciousness that seem to say that it can operate away from the body.

Only if you're willing to rewrite god like we're willing to rewrite science to fit the facts. In the early 20th there was a huge belief in aether, a standing platform outside the universe on which the universe rested. aether was never disproved it just turned out that if it existed it was unmeasurable and didn't intereact with anything. Constantly trying to add god to science is like trying to add aether in. You have to keep redefining both to fit the facts and gods don't evolve like that.
