Oui, je connais vraiment très mal la musique de Haendel, je n'en écoute quasiment pas, mais le peu que j'en ai écouté ne m'a pas particulièrement ému. Par exemple, cette musique-çi est charmante, très belle, mais elle ne m'émeut pas vraiment. En tout cas, même si on ne peux pas tout aimer, je ne désire que ça, apprendre à mieux connaître Haendel et d'une manière génerales, les millions d'oeuvres et les milliers de compositeurs que je ne connais pas aussi bien que d'autres.

Music is organised sound. In the classical period, the harmonic fundementals of tone were being explored. When that field was harvested, each discovery became more difficult, but all the more splendid (how to spell exquisite?) for that. Ravel was an extremely concientious genius in this regard. I would agree that Schost. and Prok. attacked the problem a bit brutally.

Its amazing, when i hear this music, i actually SEE music. I see roses, purple flowers, soft colours like mint green, rose, lilac, tender gorgeous ornaments twining gently all around, like in an ancient painting. I have to say this was the most difficult thing I've ever sang with that group (and that's 4+ years of singing combined!), and it frustrated me like no other. Actually, music wasn't the least of the concerns at Trent (which lasted 18 yrs on and off). The theatrical aesthetic of Tridentine Catholicism became an important contrast to Protestant worship (esp. to the sober and austere Calvinism). In addition, there were concerns regarding the comprehensibilty of the text of the Mass when sung in polyphony. I'd like to think my Latin is relatively decent, but I still have to listen closely to catch all the words. The beauty, of course, is undeniable.

i heartily agree. i'm a convert, raised protestant (staunch calvinist, so thank God we at least regarded sacraments as holy and a means of grace). although i appreciate worship and praise music and choruses at certain times, i most certainly prefer a traditional Mass. i think the Tridentine Mass is absolutely beautiful and it really is a great way to connect with God. i wouldn't attend Tridentine weekly, but i LOVE attending them.

I know... I recently have started to attend the Latin mass.... I can't believe I have put up with these protestant, jazz, cocktail-bar, hand clapping, swaying, styled masses... That was not the way the popes meant the novus ordo to be... I now prefer the Tridentine rite... it is so peaceful... I now serve and sing chant in the mass. We do the chants... and every thing... today we sang Schuberts Messe in G... a beautiful mass too..
