Paul Simon - American Tune (1975) Posted by: DIFyCUL
THANKS for putting this on.... probably Paul Simon's best song (after S&G) GREAT to revisit it after so many years. So appropriate. Excellent guitar in it too.

Damn, makes me wish I was a Yank, even with all the shit going down. Someone needs to put this back on the airwaves for all to hear, not just middle-aged old farts like me!

What an absolutely appropriate song for our country today. And I don't know a soul who's not been battered I don't have a friend who feels at ease I don't know a dream that's not been shattered or driven to its knees but it's all right, it's all right for we lived so well so long Still, when I think of the road we're traveling on I wonder what's gone wrong I can't help it, I wonder what's gone wrong

Factoid: Paul wrote this song in reaction to Nixon's reelection. Ha! He should have rereleased it as a single in 2004. We're facing similar disillusionment now, but he gives us a glimmer of hope that I think is totally appropriate for Thanksgiving 2008: We come on the ship they call the Mayflower We come on the ship that sailed the moon We come in the age's most uncertain hours and sing an American tune

What a testament to a songwriter of unparalleled genius -- thirty three years later. It still rings true. This has become an anthem of the financial meltdown, but in the time of its writing, "American Tune" spoke to a more visceral sorrow-- Americans of all classes and colors had lost their lives in Vietnam, and in greater numbers than in Iraq. Losing your 401k pales in comparison to losing your son, brother or father. We are still traveling that road, wondering what went wrong.

You have a very narrow view on this song

This song gives me goosebumps. It's always been a favorite, I literally have to listen to it multiple times to feel like I've heard it properly.

You're taking an incredibly narrow view if you think that's the whole cause of this. It wasn't Fannie or Freddie that did this. It was Bear Stearns and Goldman Sachs and Credit Default Swaps and SIV's and a bunch of really rich guys on Wall street fooling people into believing that stuff that was worthless was valuable and creating a massive real estate bubble / encouraging people to live way beyond their means. Try to read up on this a bit more before you post about it again.

As Colbert said, he is one of our poets. His lyrics and music are often haunting or melancholy but sometimes just fun and cheerful. If this is the first you've heard by Paul Simon I think you're in for a treat as you explore his music. Check out "America" "The only living boy in New York" and "Kathy's Song" for stuff that is most similar to this.

I never thought much about this song until I heard it shortly after 9/11. Since then it brings me to tears.
By: estern53. on 22 Nov 08, 14:18:15
i saw this song just performed on Colbert Report as well. At the time this song was written, America had just ended the Vietnam war, President Nixon had left office in disgrace and the country was in a deep recession. Kind of sounds like the America of today.

oh MY G-d people. Can't a beautiful song simply be appreciated and self interpreted as a beautiful song pure and simple? Just enjoy it and see how it relates to you personally. But then again *sigh* maybe the war is how it relates to you. cheers, Love, A JEWESS

PP&M Lyrics: Because all men are brothers, wherever men may be, The world shall be one union forever proud and free. No tyrant shall defeat us, no nation strike us down, All men who toil shall greet us, the whole wide world around.

For the past couple of days I've been bothered by this tune. I KNEW it back when he was doing this... I went to Wikipedia and found this: The melody is based on the famous Passion Chorale tune of J. S. Bach. The Weavers recorded it, and more recently, Peter, Paul and Mary. It has been reprinted in in Unitarian and Lutheran hymnals, in Catholic and Protestant publications, indicating that Brotherhood is ecumenical and ecumenism is Brotherhood.

Wow, you Jesus freaks can listen to a song like this and all you get is more hellfire and brimstone. I feel sorry for you, you say "God is love" yet you are the most hateful people in the world. You and the Islamic crazies are just two sides of the same coin.
